Fall is my favorite season. When I was a kid, I’d get excited about new school supplies, new school clothes, playing in and raking the leaves at my grandparents’ house (and putting them into a huge pile to burn), getting a fresh start (the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), celebrating my birthday, and seeing my friends again after the long summer vacation.
As an adult, some new reasons to love autumn have come into play. One of them was learning about, witnessing, and photographing the fall migration of Snow Geese through Mound City, Missouri and now the fall migration of the Sandhill Cranes as they make their way through Sauvie Island, Oregon. As these birds fly from their arctic tundra breeding grounds to the warmer marshes, bays and wetlands of the south, they put on a magnificent visual display that is loud and rather mind blowing. I highly recommend treating yourself to the show sometime. No ticket required.
Get out and celebrate Fall in all its wonder and be humbled for a few minutes by the vast and powerful beauty that is all around us!
