I googled “best definition of street photography” and got this AI generated response:
Street photography is photography conducted for art or inquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. It usually has the aim of capturing images at a decisive or poignant moment by careful framing and timing.
I’ve had street photography on my mind since seeing an exhibit at the International Center of Photography while visiting my kids in NYC last week. ICP’s definition of the genre is this:
Street photography opens up important discussions on how ‘the street’ and public space are places of community, joy, self-expression, advocacy, changing landscapes, and social dynamics as seen through the street photographer's lens.
I've always loved making pictures while out and about on the street. These days people are much more paranoid about being photographed in public by some stranger who's pointing a camera at them, so it’s not as easy as it used to be. I do often ask people if I can take their picture, but I have done my fair share of not asking, too.
After viewing “We Are Here: Scenes from the Streets” at ICP, I revisited my own street work from over the years. I selected some of my favorites, put them into categories and have included them below. They date back as far as the early 2000’s and as recently as last week. There are a lot, but that's a lot of years.
