In 2012, Eddie and I moved from our home to a condo, and we had to downsize big time. On the morning of the sale, I strung a backdrop to one of the trees in our front yard and made portraits of people as they exited the house with their purchases. At first I just wanted to make a document of the things we were letting go off, but it became clear very quickly that the people holding these things needed to be included in the frame. It was an emotional experience for me, saying goodbye to some of these objects, many of which were imbued with warm and lovely memories. Having the chance to ask people what they were going to do with their new treasures and to tell them something about what they had meant to us made me feel better.

Photography to the rescue.

I printed and exhibited these photographs (all shot with my phone) in color - very saturated color. I had my 15-minutes of New York Times fame when they were published on the "Lensblog" web page. Years later (2024) The Sun magazine wanted to feature a selection of the images in black and white. I wasn't sure I wanted to do that at first, but eventually I tested a few and found I really liked the way they looked.

Here are a few of my favorites.
